Fluid compatibility table

The fluid type and working temperature affects the quality of performance of any filtration system. For this reason, it is vital to verify the fluid compatibility of all component materials constituting any filter: glues, seals, filter head material, bowl material, and media.

Filtration and Particle Analyser handbook

In all hydraulic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a fluid under pressure within an enclosed circuit. This liquid is both a lubricant and a power transmitting medium. The presence of solid contaminant particles in the liquid inhibits the ability of the hydraulic fluid to lubricate and causes wear to the components. The extent of contamination in the fluid has a direct bearing on the performance and reliability of the system.

Filtration sizing

The choice of the right filter for an hydraulic system depends on both the characteristics of the other components and their sensitivity to contamination, and such key factors as: maximum working pressure (Pmax), pressure drop (DP), fluid working temperature (T), filtration efficiency (%) & filtration ratio (ßx(c)), filter life expressed in grams by its Retained Capacity (mR), fluid type, placement in the system. Benefits of proper positioning and sizing include:

  • Greater reliability of the system
  • Longer life of the fluid components
  • Reduction of failures

Filtration & Element technology

Filters are constructed by fiber interlacing. Such wraps form pathways of different shapes and sizes in which the particles remain trapped when they find smaller apertures than their diameter. Depth filters are generally produced with cellulose fiber impregnated with resins, metal fibers or inorganic fibers. In inorganic fiber filtration, usually called microfiber, the filtering layers are often overlapped in order to increase the ability of the filter to retain the contaminant down to a lower mm level.

Zerospark: the anti-static filter

zerospark is a specialist solution designed to solve the problem of electrostatic discharge inside hydraulic filters. Caused by the electrical charge build-up due to the passage of oil through the filters, this can result in damage to filter elements, oils and circuit components. It can even cause fire hazards in environments where flammable materials are present.

R&D

Supported by the latest technology, including optical microscopes with HD imaging capabilities, MP Filtri’s exhaustive testing capability is carried out with emphasis on its comprehensive MULTIPASS analysis – in accordance with ISO 16889. This method compares the amount of contaminant present upstream and downstream in the filter element – calculating the ratio of Beta filtration by the size of the particles and retention capacity.

The maximum working pressure and the pressure drop through the filter according to the flow rate (ISO 3968) and the so-called bubble point (ISO 2942) are also examined.

Contamination management

Up to 80% of all failures on hydraulic systems are due to contaminants in the hydraulic fluid. Solid contamination is recognized as the main cause of malfunction, failure and early degradation in hydraulic systems. It is impossible to remove completely, but it can be effectively controlled by appropriate devices.
